DNF at 25%.I had heard such great things about Penny Reid's books. The premise of this book seemed so great, light, funny and beards and all! So it was like a slap in the face to realize that Truth or Beard is yet another romance book where sexual assault and slutshaming is romanticized.Jessica is ridiculously naive and juvenile in her actions and thoughts. It was Duane however whom I hated. He pretends to be his brother Beau, engages in a sexual situation with Jess and when the thing blows up in his face, what does he do? He basically blames Jess about the whole thing, physically holds her down and tells her to calm down, when Jess is rightfully pissed. Because apparently it's still the woman's role in situations like this to calmly take part in a reasonable conversation about what just happened and take part of the blame. I was just so incensed about this whole thing.Duane proceeds to slutshame his ex-girlfriend later on and putting Jess on a pedestral. He can't have sex with Jess, because this is a girl he's about to marry. WHAT? There's a skinny dipping scene where they are both naked and Duane warms Jess up by hugging her without asking for a permission in a situation where Jess is obviously mad at him. Eww.For some reason it was the emergence of some ridiculous biker sideplot that made me drop the book, I just couldn't anymore. I hear there's skinheads later on, isn't that just peachy.So I hated the book, just HATED it. Authors just shouldn't write this kind of cr*p in this day and age. Ok so I am so glad to take a leap of faith and decide to read this after several unfair and almost closely dishonest to barely credible reviews caused me to have put this book on my avoid list. It's been out a while so I'm not gonna hold back details.First of all everyone knows I avoid intimacy with others after meeting. Yet I've got some exceptions. Like in this scenario. Jessica has had a huge crush on Beau (1 of 2 Winston twins) forever. Like seriously forever. Yet this crush didn't stop her from dating and kissing lots of guys. Maybe she only had one lover yet that's OK with me at least she didn't wait around. Duane tricks her and makes her believe he's Beau while laying a whopper of a kiss on her. We learn Duane has had a crush on her for years yet thought she hated him. She actually sorta did. Once all the animosity was torn away they realized that love hate relationship was some heavy physical and emotional chemistry.I loved Duane. Here's a good loyal guy. Good to all of the people he cares about. So yea the "truth or dare kiss". It's one of the reasons I had this avoid. It wasn't anything at all like it was portrayed by those mean natured reviews. Hell there Jessica is cozied up to Beau in front of Duane after telling him she hates him. So he took a dare kissed his ex and felt zero except disgust. Ran immediately after Jessica on the next dare and showed who he wanted. Did not bother me folks. At all. Then some made comments about her innocence physical wise. Hell they both only had 1 lover.. Just one.Yes Tina is her cousin well people she hasn't seen or talked to her in 8 yrs and before that barely. That's an acquaintance not a cousin. He proved page after page thru being told he's not gonna be chosen for the long hall that he's in it always with Jessica. He definitely stole my heart and I loved this story so much.Gosh he wanted to court her. So sweet so sexy and I am absolutely addicted now to this authors writing. I may just need to read her blind. No more getting scared off from reviews.Omg that bonus chapter from Drew and Ashley.. I'm so ready to go back and read their book. Now I've got 3 series or more to catch up with. Yay. Binge time baby. Oh sigh arcs and work..
